Pugin INSPIRED Step RISERS.
Tile Fire worked with Ramsgate Town Team to provide these step risers. Each tile was designed by a student in Ramsgate and selected by a committee. We think that the tiles look great and are a great piece of public art that commemorates the designer A.W.N. Pugin
Here’s what Rebekah from the Ramsgate Town Team had to say about the project….
“Following a year-long project, a group of students with an average age of thirteen, from Royal Harbour Academy and Chatham and Clarendon Grammar in Ramsgate, Kent, produced Pugin inspired tile designs to be installed on 32 risers of Kent Steps at Kent Place.
Funded by the Historic England Heritage Schools Programme as part of the Ramsgate Heritage Action Zone and coordinated by Ramsgate Town Team, the students studied Pugin at school, learning about his life and creations at school and then visited Pugin’s family home and church, The Grange and St Augustine’s before taking preliminary sketches and photos of interesting features that they would later use in their designs.
With over 90 designs submitted, the three judges had a difficult choice but were mindful that the contemporary designs had to complement each other and demonstrate that they were inspired by Pugin. Ultimately, 23 designs were chosen and extra versions were created in various colours.
The designs were reproduced and fired onto porcelain tiles by Tile Fire Ltd and installed by SVK Stone & Ceramics Specialists in March 2020, just before ‘lockdown’. Once the social gathering embargo is lifted, we will be presenting the proud students with a certificate and a framed version of their tile designs, which were generously donated by Tile Fire Ltd.”
With the permission of the schools and the committee we are now able to offer a commemorative tile from one of the winning designs fro sale. For each commemorative tile sold Tile Fire will send £2.50 to the school that your chosen design came from.
