ARTIST Claire Cotterill creates ‘digital mosaics’ with Tile Fire
We’ve collaborated with U.K Artist/Maker, Claire Cotterill on several mosaics and printed tile murals projects, both public and private commissions, over the past few years. Coming from a background in traditional, site-specific mosaic installations in private and public places, she has innovated in her practice, incorporating digital creative media and new technological processes. She designs bespoke tiling and utilises waterjet cutting techniques to create stand alone ‘digital mosaics’ or combines with a traditional mosaic making approach creating unique and durable works of art.

Project: Bespoke Tile Commission for Private Client in Cheltenham
Claire had a client who was struggling to find tiles she liked in the general market, nothing stood out to her so she contacted her to see if she could create something a little different.
Following an initial consultation to discuss styles and colourways, Claire created some designs to brief and threw in a ‘wild card’ which she chose in the end! Designs were sent to the team at Tile Fire for test and fire and to see how they worked together as a whole. Following a few minor adjustments, the client was happy and ordered 3 square metres. Delivered directly to her, a local tiler completed the installation and she was over the moon with the result!

Project: ‘Sons of Rest’
Claire was commissioned to create a public artwork to commemorate the ‘Sons of Rest’ movement and its roots in WW1, for Handsworth Park Arts trail in Birmingham.
Combing digitally printed photographs onto waterjet cut porcelain tiles and traditional style mosaic coloured tiles, the end result resembles a stain glass window and it is very impressive!

“We invited selected artists to propose ideas for a public art mosaic, around the theme of WW1 and the ‘Sons of Rest Movement’, to form part of Handsworth Park Art Trail.
