creating a bespoke space with a Pin up girl tile mural
Jennifer James contacted the team at Tile Fire last summer, looking for a bespoke feature tiled mural for her new shower room. She was renovating her home and wanted to create a unique space with a vintage pin up girl artwork printed on the tiles in the shower cubicle. We loved the idea and looked forward to working with her to create her custom made tile art.
Sourcing her own artwork, Jennifer requested a few changes to the artwork to be made. Our studio team edited the image as she asked; switching the hat and emblem to the Royal Navy’s crest and altering the number of rank stripes on the sleeve.
Jennifer chose 20x20cm tiles to minimise the number of grout lines cutting through the artwork. We made sure that the grout lines didn’t fall through the eyes or other key parts of the bespoke mural, and emailed a visual for Jennifer to approve prior to printing the tiles.
We digitally printed the tiles with the artwork and fired them in a kiln at around 840ºC. This ensures the image fuses with the glaze and is permanent for the life of the tile. The artwork will not fade in sunlight and can be cleaned easily.
Unfortunately, Jennifer noticed a cracked tile once the mural had been installed on the wall. So, she got back in touch with us and we were easily able to quickly reprint and replace it for her, to avoid delaying the project
