When the team at Tile Fire were asked to produce printed art tiles designed by students in Ramsgate, we were excited to involved in such an inspiring project funded by Historic England.
Year 8 and 9 students at The Royal Harbour Academy and Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School in Ramsgate, Kent were set a brief to design tiles. The tiles were to be influenced by the work of Augustus Pugin at St Augustine’s church and The Grange in Ramsgate.
The students took sketches and produced artwork based on Pugin’s famous architecture, stained glass windows and encaustic floor tile designs. They then converted their artworks into a digital format ready for printing.
We then took the artwork files and printed them as ceramic decal transfers, ensuring the colours were nice and bright to match the original artworks. We applied the decals to vitrified porcelain tiles suitable for exterior use, able to withstand all weathers and temperatures. The decorated tiles are kiln fired to high temperatures, so the images sink into the glaze of the tiles becoming durable and easy to clean
The bespoke digitally printed tiles are now installed on Kent Steps in Kent Place, Ramsgate. The colourful tiles have undoubtedly rejuvenated the area!
